Don DeVoe
Hi, Tom, Karen, Jerry, Kent, Amy, Abby and I flew up to land on the dry lake beds near Lake George this afternoon. We were in 3 Super Cubs and one PA-14. My nephew, David, and his son, Jake, flew up from Palmer in their Piper J-5 to join us at the spot where we had decided to have lunch. After lunch we hiked up onto the ridge above the strip for a great view of Colony Glacier.
Our next stop after lunch was at the very south end of Upper Lake George. David had not landed there before today, but he had no trouble with the landing or take off. His plane has a fairly small engine, so he has to be a little more cautious than some of the rest of us. While we were on this strip, Tony, who has the Super Cub that ties down next to me on Hood Strip, arrived.
We did a little more looking around up in Grasshopper Valley and down in front of Knik Glacier, then we all headed for home.
Our original plan for the day had been to go over into the Alaska Range - possibly through Merrill Pass - but the reported winds and the winds aloft forecasts made it sound like there might be a lot of turbulence so we thought that a trip to the east might be a better idea. Based on all the blowing dust we saw over the Susitna River, we probably made a good choice.
So Long, Don
